Exam Preparation

Revision - 3 Tough Truths!

  • You have got to do it ! Not your teachers
  • Revision takes time!
  • Revising is remembering. (It is not revising unless you are fixing it' into your brain.)

Revising means 'DOING!'

  • When you are revising you should be doing something with your notes to FIX information into your brain.
  • To revise successfully - play to your stregnths and work on your weaknesses!

Choose your method!

  • The easiest way to fix information into your brain is to write it down.
  • The brain has three kind of memory cells: sound, sight and feel.
  • The best learning takes place when all three types of cell are used at the same time.

When you write information down........

  • See the words
  • Say the words in your mind
  • Use your spacial senses as you write them down on the paper.

Don't just copy - Summarise!

  • You could just copy out notes again and again. However, it is far better to summarise them over and over again to get them firmly embeded into your brain.

Organise Yourself!

  • Set your sights! Look at the big picture and think about your life long goals.
  • Remember, it is not the amount of time spent revising that is most important but what you manage to Learn in that time.
  • The average intelligent adult can concentrate at best for about half an hour at a time. So you should organise your study time into short blocks.
  • At the end of each block, take a brief break (5mins) or simply change activities. Alternate between subjects (2 or 3) to maintain interest.
  • Set yourself targets! eg. 'learn the vocabulary on pages 40 & 41 and test myself' rather than 'spend 3 hours revising French'
  • Recognise your acheivements to encourage and motivate yourself.       STAY POSITIVE!

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF!

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat a balanced diet with at least five portions of fruit and/or vegetables each day.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Make time for activities that help you relax or that relieves stress. Exercise!
  • Seek help and support from your peers, teachers and parents.

Perfect Preperation Prevents Poor Performance!

IT WILL ALL BE WORTH IT IN THE END.
